Abstract

In 2018, the Resolution of the Collegiate Board (RDC) 306/2004 was replaced by RDC 222/2018, which brought new guidelines and positions regarding Health Services Waste Management (HSWM). The new resolution defined  HSWM as a set of management procedures, planned and implemented based on scientific and technical bases, legal norms, with the objective of minimizing the production of waste and providing for the generated waste  a safe way forward, in an efficient way, aiming at protecting workers, preserving health, natural resources and the environment. This paper aims to discuss the reflexes of the update of RDC 306/2004 to RDC 222/2018 of ANVISA, regarding the fulfillment of the obligations of this normative regarding the elaboration of the Health Services Waste Management Plan (HSWMP) and the adequacy of Health Units in conducting their changes. The Resolution is not a regulation that meets all needs and the country remains in need of regulations in the area of waste, however, questions about biological HDW, such as the case of white or red bags,  sewage discharge, disposal of Group A4 waste in landfills are doubts that are being pacified in the sanitary and environmental fields. There is not always regulation in the ideal format, but it is necessary to recognize its importance in the proper functioning of institutions and productive systems.
