WASTE MANAGEMENT IN ISWA MEMBERS COUNTRIES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

Solid waste management services are considered essential for contributing to disease prevention and control, including Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, its continuity requires contingency measures to guarantee the health and safety of workers and the population, which differ according to local conditions. To identify and evaluate the changes adopted and the guidelines released in the solid waste sectors during the pandemic around the world, this research studied countries with representation on the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). The methodology adopted was documentary research and the materials available on the websites of ISWA and its members were assessed against the ISWA recommendations. The results showed that the focus of most locations was the continuity of operations, especially collection, and concern for the health of workers. Regarding the collection and sorting of recyclables, there was variation between stoppage and continuation of services. About the masks and home residues of people suspected or contaminated by COVID-19, the most adopted and recommended practice was collection together with common or residual waste. Regarding the management of waste from health units, no information was found to indicate changes. It is concluded that the pandemic required adaptations from the waste sectors, which varied from place to place and did not always follow ISWA recommendations.
