Abstract

This article presents qualitative and quantitative data of the implementation of worm composting system in a residential condominium at the city of Novo Hamburgo-RS. Based on monitoring the 5 steps of the process, it was possible to measure the efficiency and identify probable failures. These steps are: waste sorting at source, counting, weighing and screening the plastic bags; waste disposal in boxes and covering it with earthworms; leachate and organic compost collecting; filling in the spreadsheet. According the data, it was verified that in the twelve months period, almost two tons of composting solid waste were intercepted before being sent to landfill. Which approximately 400kg were converted in a great quality organic compost with levels of micro and macronutrients identical to the commercialized ones. The reduction of solid waste sent to landfill and the production of a good quality and low cost new product distributed to the residents are an important tool for environmental sensitization in municipal management.
