Abstract

Landfills are one of the most recurrent sources of contamination of ground and surface water. To limit its impacts, current environmental regulations impose the adoption of specific measures on the discharge of effluents in water resources, thus promoting the protection of water quality and the environment around landfills. The aim of this study was to monitor the quality of surface and groundwater around the sanitary landfill in the municipality of Santo Ângelo (RS), as well as the leachate characterization of the deactivated treatment ponds. For this, several water and effluent quality parameters were evaluated and compared with the results obtained in recent years and with the regulations in force. The results showed that there is contamination in the area by several pollutants, such as lead and chloride, frequently detected in areas of incorrect disposal of solid waste. In addition, the leachate collected from the cell does not have the proper treatment for its characteristics, making leachate containment ponds a great environmental risk. In view of this, it is assessed that it is necessary to develop a plan for the remediation of degraded areas, to close the landfill cell, treat the effluent from the lagoons and recover the damage caused by the decades of incorrect MSW disposal.
