COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF A SANITARY LANDFILL TO THE ENVIRONMENTALLY APPROPRIATE DISPOSAL OF SOLID URBAN WASTE IN SOUTHERN REGION OF BRAZIL

The creation of Law 12.305 (2010) which established the National Solid Waste Policy had among its goals the elimination of environmentally inappropriate disposal of urban solid waste in Brazil. This article presents a case study carried out in a landfill located in the municipality of Candiota, in the southwest region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The methodology used was to carry out in research on the public database on the generation and disposal of solid waste in the southern region of Brazil, together with the data obtained regarding the quantitative of urban solid waste disposed of in the Sanitary Landfill in Candiota during a period of ten years. The results found demonstrate that the Candiota Sanitary Landfill, in the analyzed period, had a contribution of 3,17% of the total value of urban solid waste from the southern region of Brazil that were destined in sanitary landfills. In 2020, which was the year in which it had the greatest contribution due to the largest number of municipalities served, the sanitary landfill received about 4,80% of urban solid waste that is disposed of in an environmentally appropriate way in the southern region of Brazil.
