Despite the fact that sanitary sewage is a primary need, in Brazil there are significant precariousness in relation to its functioning, which represents a serious environmental problem that affects, above all, the big cities. In this article, the objective was to present the current situation of sanitary sewage in Brazil and to present the challenges for the implantation of ETEs in the national territory. This is a qualitative, exploratory study that uses bibliographical research as a methodological resource. The analysis is based on understanding the current situation in Brazil regarding the universalization of sanitary sewage services, what are thedestination routes for by-products generated in conventional ETEs and also what are the possibilities for sustainability in sewage treatment. The central problem is that the Brazilian demographic issue is a challenge in view of the growing need to think of solutions to the issue of sanitary sewage, which adds to the low investments in the area. These conditions are directly linked to the delay in the process of universalizing sewage treatment in the country, which results in non-compliance with the goals and objectives established in international agreements for sustainability. Therefore, this article aimed to understand the existing potential for the use of by-products originating from the treatment of sewage carried out in a sustainable way, carrying out a theoretical review and a study based on officially established data. The need to think about socio-environmental strategies is reaffirmed, with a view to improving processes with regard to sanitary sewage.
