Currently the inadequate disposal of solid waste is the main cause of contamination of the environment. When used incorrectly, they can cause degradation and death to the organisms, also affecting the public health of the population. Some enterprises in the mechanical workshop sector have weaknesses in the understanding of the importance of carrying out the correct handling and disposal of their waste, mainly because they generate, in their majority, hazardous solid waste. This work seeks to establish a proposal for environmental suitability for a mechanical workshop in the municipality of São Lourenço do Sul-RS. The method used was based on a visit to the mechanical workshop based on a study and analysis of the conditions and restrictions imposed in the enterprise's environmental license in relation to the proper management of solid waste. The present study showed, through the data collected during the visit and applied methodology, that it is possible to carry out an adequate environmental diagnosis and suggest actions that will benefit the environment and the health of employees and the population in general. In general, it can be noted the fragility of information from workers about actions that minimize environmental impacts during the performance of daily activities, such as the separation, identification, storage and final disposal of waste, whether for recycling or final disposal in landfills. It is expected with the proposed study, that compliance with environmental licensing becomes simpler for workers and entrepreneurs, by clarifying the consequences and alternatives that promote environmental and even economic improvements for the mechanical workshop.
