Abstract

Each Brazilian state has distinct geographical, economic, social and political characteristics, which results in differences in the generation and management of household waste. The states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, for example, are the two largest in the Southeast, responsible for a large daily generation of waste, and each of them manages their waste in a different way. Given this scenario, this work aimed to compare the management of household waste in these two states, focusing on selective collection, composting and final disposal. Through a literature review, a survey of general data, panoramas of waste management and public policies developed on the subject was carried out. The data found were compared in order to understand the similarities and differences between the two states. As a result, São Paulo presented better indicators for selective collection and adequate final disposal. Regarding composting, the two states have few initiatives. In terms of public policies, both carried out several actions seeking to improve waste management, especially selective collection and final disposal. However, there are still aspects to be improved in both states: selective collection must be implemented in all municipalities, the organic fraction of household waste must be treated, and existing dumps must be closed and their areas recovered.
