Abstract

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the potential of a specific fraction of waste rejected from the selective collection of the Municipality of Florianópolis as an alternative fuel source and to evaluate the emissions from its combustion. For this purpose, the gravimetric composition of the waste was determined based on the Municipal Plan of Selective Collection of Florianópolis. To assess the energy potential of the waste to serve as Refuse-Derived Fuel - RDF, its calorific value was estimated. The calorific value was estimated by analyzing the elemental composition of the waste fractions and with the aid of the Modified Dulong, Lloyd and Davenport. The results obtained by these models showed that the RDF could supply between 30 and 35% of the energy demand at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Emissions were estimated by applying the methodology of AP-42 from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and were compared with the limits established in CONAMA 316/2002. Except from carbon monoxide, the pollutants evaluated presented concentrations below the maximum limit allowed in the current legislation, therefore, being in conformity.
